low carb diet

A low carb diet is not a diet in the normal sense of going on a diet, lose a few pounds then go back to normal eating. A low carb diet is a lifestyle, you change the way you eat for good.

How does a low carb diet work ?

The principle behind a low carb diet is that it causes your body to burn up fat naturally, while at the same time creating the conditions that prevent further fat from building up.

The principle is this,
Apart from dietary fiber, large amounts of carbohydrates, (sugars and starches), are broken down into simple sugars
The body will burn these sugars for energy rather than stored fat, simply because it is easier to obtain energy this way.
Large amounts of insulin are produced to aid the absorption of the sugars by the cells, unfortunately insulin also promotes the conversion of excess sugar into fat.
So, a diet with a large amount of carbohydrate will lead to the body using sugars for energy, and accumulate the excess sugar to fat, and will tend to not burn any of the stored fat.
 
A low carb diet is intended to counter this.
With a low carb diet the simple sugars are not available for the body utilize, so it turns to it's fat reserve for energy.
Less insulin is produced, so any simple sugars that are present are not converted to fat.
A low carb diet therefore transforms the way your body works,
 
There is another important difference between a low carb diet and a traditional calorie controlled diet.
A traditional calorie controlled diet will reduce fat, but it will also reduce lean muscle. Reducing the amount of lean muscle will lower your metabolism and therefore your capacity to burn calories, so the diet become less effective. Also, if you give up the diet and go back to normal eating, because your metabolism is now slower, you will burn less calories than you did before you started your diet, and you will put weight back on again.
A low carb diet reduces fat but does not reduce lean muscle, with a little light exercise you will actually build lean muscle and therefore increase your metabolism, increasing your ability to burn calories. A low carb diet in effect converts fats to lean muscle. Lean muscle takes up less bulk than fat so you therefore look thinner. Initially you won't loose weight, because lean muscle weighs more than fat volume for volume as it is denser, but you will look thinner. Later in the diet you will then start to loose weight as well.
Should you decide that a low carb diet is not for you and come of it, you are in a better position than the traditional calorie controlled dieter, you will have a faster metabolism, plenty of lean muscle, and will therefore not be so prone to put weight back on again so quickly.
 
And a low carb diet will not make you look like a body builder, you are utilizing lean muscle, these are not the same muscles a body builder works on, so don't let the idea that a low carb diet is building muscles worry you, a low carb diet strengthens and improves the muscles that hold you in and make you look trim.
 

So what choice of foods are available if you go on low card diet. Well, in fact you can eat just what you eat now, but low carb versions. In fact, one of the great appeals of a low carb diet, is that you can eat as much as you do now, you won't feel hungry and you won't have to give up food you can taste.
